South Houston is its own city, about 3 miles east of our base, and it has its own fence rules. Unlike Houston, it asks for a permit for almost any fence work, so the paperwork is part of the job here.
South Houston is also one of the few nearby cities that allows a 6-foot wrought iron fence in the front yard, which makes iron a good choice when you want security at the front without closing off the view.
Height: side and back fences up to 6 ft 6 in. Along the front line, in the front setback or between the house and the street: 3 ft for wood, brick or masonry, 5 ft for chain link and 6 ft for wrought iron.
No barbed wire in residential zones, nothing that blocks the view within 25 feet of a corner, and pool fences from 4 ft to 6 ft 6 in with a self-closing gate.
Do you need a fence permit in South Houston?
Yes. South Houston requires a permit for any fence that is built new, moved, repaired or altered, with a survey in duplicate, a scale drawing and the line marked on the ground. The fee starts at $30 plus 6 cents per foot after the first 25 feet, and there is a final inspection.
