A wood privacy fence is still the most common backyard fence in Houston: it closes off the yard, keeps the dog in and costs less up front than iron or vinyl. Cedar holds up better against rot and insects and turns silver gray if you leave it unstained. Pressure-treated pine costs less and takes stain well.
What makes a wood fence last here is what you don't see. Houston clay swells after rain and shrinks in a drought, and a shallow post works its way out of line within a few summers. That is why we set posts in concrete and pay attention to depth, spacing and the rails, not only to the boards on the outside.
Inside the City of Houston, a fence 8 feet tall or less does not need a city permit. HOAs and deed restrictions often set their own height, style and color rules, so if you are in an HOA, get their approval first and we build to what they approved.
